How Nigeria can be great – Obasanjo

Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has reiterated that for Nigeria to be greater and achieve development and progress in every sector, it must have strong institutions.
Obasanjo made the statement while playing host to members of National Executive of Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM, led by its President, Dr. Micheal Olawale-Cole.

According to him, no nation would achieve development without having strong institutions and good leadership.

Speaking about the qualities of a good leader, Obasanjo said the two things that were necessary and expected from good leaders in any nation were tolerance and sobriety.

He lamented that, lack of strong institutions in the country had made it to take a step forward and two steps backwards.

He said: “As a nation, if we are going to move away from unpredictability of taking one step forward and two steps backwards,we need strong institutions like Nigerian Institute of Management.”

Earlier, the President and Chairman of Council,N IM, Dr. Micheal Olawale-Cole told Obasanjo that the institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding ,MoU, with the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji in the area of professional training in February.

Olawale-Cole however said it was shameful for the 2012 budget not to have been signed into law in April, disclosing that, National leadership of NIM has written to President Goodluck Jonathan on the development.

The NIM President further stated that as part of efforts to rescue the nation from the crisis, the institute had “looked critically and in-depth at the issues of subsidy removal, national security and 2012 national budget.

“We submitted the report on subsidy removal and national security to Goodluck Jonathan’s administration last month. This, we believe, will help it in resolving the knotty issues which have engaged the nation’s attention for some time now.”

He however was silent over the institute’s position on the matter.

He pledged to send reports on the 2012 national budget, power and employment generation as well as local content among others to the President soon.

He said that governors and other political office holders would be assisted by way of sharing NIM’s ideas with them.
