The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is expected to re-open the alleged corruption trial of former Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, at the Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta begining from today.
Justice Olanrewaju Mabekoje, had on March 2, quashed all the 43- count charge allegedly ranging from corruption, illegal deduction of local government funds and fraudulent conversion of public property on the grounds that the anti-graft agency failed to seek the permission of the court to amend the charges preferred against Daniel.
Mabekoje, in the ruling had said that EFCC committed fundamental error for not seeking the leave of the court before filling the charges against Daniel.
EFCC, however, through its counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, had filed an “application for leave to prefer an information under section 340(2) (b) of the Criminal Procedure Laws of Ogun State 2006, charge No. EFCC/01/2012 Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Otunba Justus Olugbenga Daniel.”
The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olatokunbo Olopade, had on March 30, granted the request of the anti-graft agency to list information against Daniel.
According to the spokesman of EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwajaren, the notice to re-arraign Daniel was signed by the Chief Judge which gave the Federal Government the clearance to re-arraign him. The 38-count charge levelled against the former governor borders on alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of public fund.
Meantime, Governor Ibikunle Amosun has promised that his administration would begin the reconstruction of Papalanto road into a four-lane highway towards bringing more development to the area.
Amosun stated this in Ilaro, headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Area at the coronation and presentation of staff of office to the new Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle.
Amosun said though the road belonged to the Federal Government, his administration would reconstruct it to make life more meaningful to the people of the area. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
