Varsities will go on Strike - SSANU

The members  of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have rejected a directive by the Federal Government that their salaries should henceforth be paid from Abuja.

They said the non-beneficial directive was aimed at cowing them whenever they want to fight for their legitimate rights from the government.

National Vice-President, SSANU, Comrade Alfred Jimoh who spoke in Ibadan, yesterday, said: "We have directed our members in the country not to append their signatures to the forms being distributed to effect the new payment directive on our salaries. We rejected it because the government did not carry us along before implementing the new policy."

Already, the union has warned the government that it would paralyse administrative activities in all the universities across the country any moment from today if President Goodluck Jonathan failed to assent to a bill from the National Assembly on the 65 years retirement age for its members.

The union said its members from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and other universities in the country had complained that compulsory retirement letters had been sent to them by their respective school authorities.

According to the zonal SSANU boss, many members of the union are now being retired in droves using the old and unwanted retirement age of 60.

On the scrapping of the Tai Solarin University of Education by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the union condemned the move in its entirety advising the governor to leave the matter for the National Universities Commission to decide.
