Residents of Lagos and other states in the South-West would soon heave a sigh of relief from the current hot weather going by the forecast of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
The high temperature witnessed since the beginning of March in the region had been a source of worry to residents.
“There will be showers in two or three days to mark the beginning of the normal rainy season. I’m not talking about the thunder storms and slight rain witnessed earlier this year, but the onset of the normal rainy season. NIMET actually predicted the onset to be March 22, 2012 but there could be a one-to-six-days margin of error in terms of timing.
“The maximum temperature in this region has been at 35 Celsius and it is associated with humidity, which causes the heat wave. It is an ugly situation, but NIMET had actually predicted at the beginning of the year that there will be high temperature from March.
“But the good news is that we have already entered the onset. February/March is the transition period for the rainy season and the rains are here soon.”
Okoloye could, however, not specify the intensity of the rain in the South-West this year, especially whether there will be flooding similar to what was experienced last year.
“Last year, our forecast in this region came real, but what I can’t say now is the intensity of the rain this year until I lay my hands on the data,” he said.
The experience of floods in Lagos (July) and September (Ibadan, Oyo State) would not be forgotten in a hurry as they led to huge losses of human lives and property.
