Due to the worsening inter-religious violence in the country, Pope Benedict XVI has sent an emissary to Nigeria to join in efforts to find a solution to the problem.
The official, Jean Cardinal Louise Tauran, who is President of the Pontifical Council for Inter Religious Dialogue at the Vatican, was in Jos, Plateau State, weekend, to participate in an inter-faith dialogue organised by the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama.
Tauran, who said he was in the country as representative of the Pope to contribute to ending the violence in the country, stressed that mutual tolerance was key to peaceful co-existence as no religion encourages violence.
Convener of the dialogue, Archbishop Kaigama, stressed the importance of peace to society’s well-being. He noted that the large turnout for the dialogue from across religious and ethnic divides was a pointer to their interest for peaceful coexistence.
