One die, four others injured as NITEL training school building collapses

A storey building located inside the Nigerian Telecommunication Training School compound, Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos, collapsed yesterday killing one person.
Four other persons who were badly wounded are currently being treated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja

Sources gathered that the victims were labourers hired to work on the one-storey building.
One of the labourers, who identified himself simply as Sodiq, said the incident occurred around 8:30am on Thursday.

He said, “We are over 70 labourers hired to refurbish the building. Most of my colleagues had gone out to have breakfast but I remained in the building, on the ground floor, when it trembled.
“I immediately beckoned to my colleagues who were on the first floor but the building quickly collapsed.

“One of them managed to jump off but sustained some injuries while the other lost four fingers of his right hand when the building collapsed.”
Sodiq said three others were trapped in the rubble but a team of rescuers were able to rescue two while one other person remained trapped for hours.

A combined team of policemen attached to the Mushin Division, fire fighters, and officials of the State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEPA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, tried for hours to rescue the last victim who was later discovered to have been crushed beneath the rubble.
Some military men have arrived the scene to beef up security at the Nitel premises when CityBeats visited the scene yesterday.

The stern looking security personnel prevented people from entering the NITEL compound.
An eye witness Bayo Sheu said the incident occurred around 8am in the morning. He added that four other brick layers who were wounded in the incident have been taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Police spokesman Mr Jaiyeoba Joseph, who confirmed the incident, added that the remains of the deceased, one Matthew Adesuyi, 28, has been deposited at the Isolo General Hospital Mortuary for autopsy
