Nigeria police to wear new camouflage uniform

The federal government has approved a new camouflage uniform for officers of the Nigerian Police Force and the test-run of the uniform was launched by the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), wearing the uniform.

This was made known on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Olusola Amore, which stated that “President Goodluck Jonathan has approved a test-run of a camouflage dress for the Nigeria Police Force as one of its operational attires.”

According to the statement, the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar stated that “his appearance in the new police camouflage is a process of test running the uniform as one of the Force’s operational outfits.”

The test-run of the new camouflage, which has got the approval of President Goodluck Jonathan, is also expected to boost the image of Police officers as well as discourage them from developing cold feet any time they came face to face with robbers.

A policeman stands guard near a ballot box at a polling unit before the start of parliamentary election in Surulere district in Lagos, Nigeria on Saturday.

The IGP stated that “the new dress is in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government and the long desire of the Police management team to reform and to launder an acceptable image for the police through the turn-out of its officers and men.”
“The camouflage which is an admixture of black, white and ash colours, will serve as an operational dress for the police with some inherent advantages when fully integrated and confirmed as one of the official police outfits.”

The Police authority noted that cost-saving and easy maintenance are part of the reasons for the planned change. “The advantages of the new police camouflage include cost effectiveness to maintain; operationally durable; highly customized with security features to forestall impersonation and environmentally friendly.
New police uniform

The Police boss urged the public to come up with constructive criticisms regarding the new police camouflage, so that public opinion will be given adequate consideration.
This is the second time the government is making moves to change the all black uniform of the security operatives. A blue shirt was launched for the police officers, years ago but the policy was not translated to the lower ranks of the officers as only the senior officers donned the light blue shirt.#

  8. Its a good innovation. However, it should be gradually introduced.Let there be a scheduled intensive training for officers on Policing in a democratic setting and attitudinal change for the officers as well as patriotism. By the end of such training, the participants (who are expected to be a new breed of police officers) should then be given the new uniform while another batch go for the training. By so doing, we will be able to identify a transformed officer from the old breed and accord them their due respect. After some time, all officers would have undergone the training and we will have a transformed police officers with new kits. God bless Nigeria!

  10. change in uniform is good but d change dt is needed is d change in attitude of our police force change in uniform without d change in d man wearing d uniform will amount to no change at all

  11. A change of uniform without a corresponding change of attitude is like fetching water with basket. The nigerian police is infested with corruption and all forms of ills. This transformation must go beyond uniforms.

  12. The essence of change, I think anyway, is to do things better than what is hitherto the other of the day. But change in nomenclature might not achieve the desired objective. I think GEJ should look beyond his present perceived change ideology. Remember, any change that does not translate to the betterment of Nigerians is more or less no change

  13. Wouldn't this aptly fit the description.....an old wine in a new jar. It's the content of a container that descibes its identity & usage. Let them all be orientated fully to the basics. The police force is not an avenue to amass ill-gotten wealth and suppress the people you are originally meant to protect.

  14. This will invite more rage from the local military units. Hope we have not forgotten the saga between the police and Army?

Expect more clashes on the street cos our boys will not tolerate any arrogant/ill-trained/undisciplined police dressed in camouflage!

Let them get some discipline first then only they change uniforms.

  21. yes the changes in uniform is not a bad idea, but the most important thing is good behavior from the police, the corruption had eating deep into nigeria police force that need a highly discipline IG to clean, before we think of uniform.Nigerian are even afraid of police more in highway than armed robber, this serious may god help us in this country

  23. I think it's a good idea, I will want to suggest that the uniform can be designed with pocket cover and make it look beautiful as if it ha pocket, but it must never have pocket atall with that they may find it difficult to collect bribe.

  24. I go with the last comment, uniform without pocket = to no taking of bribe any how.

  27. I saw the Chief of Air Staff in a similar camouflage, abi? I hope there will be no mixed up? Well, the summary is change the attitude first and then the uniform!

  28. The blue uniform is better, smarter and clearly presents a clear distinction between the police and the military. this new uniform will bring in confusion or conflict between the two forces, unless the new uniform serves only the purpose of camouflage for special operations.
