My naval boyfriend kidnapped, threw my 3 weeks-old baby into Lagos lagoon – Bereaved mother

POLICE detectives attached to the homicide department of the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos have begun investigation over the alleged involvement of a naval rating serving in one of the organization's formations in Lagos, in the death of a three-week old baby.

Reports say the rating identified as Moses Joseph, who is presently in the custody of his organization, allegedly hired some thugs to beat his former girlfriend and her mother, abducted the baby from her and allegedly threw it into the Lagos lagoon. The reason for this callous act is yet to be ascertained.
Unwanted pregnancy: It was gathered that the said rating was dating the mother of his baby also identified as Glory Yusuf who subsequently became pregnant to the disapproval of the rating.

Naval barracks
It was said that the duo who were living together in one apartment at the Naval barracks, Malu Road, Apapa, Lagos later parted ways after the lady disclosed that she was pregnant.
The  27-year-old mother who was spotted at the SCID in tears, yesterday, said she had to run for dear life when her former lover boy ceaselessly beat her for not aborting the pregnancy. She said that when she was eventually delivered of the baby, January 13, 2012, the naval rating resurfaced to congratulate her, adding that she did not know that he meant evil.

Attack by kidnappers: MissYusuf said that three weeks later, the rating sponsored some kidnappers who stormed her Boundary, Ajegunle residence and kidnapped her baby while she was away. Crime Alert was told that the matter was later reported at Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS,Wey, Ojo, following which two persons including the lover boy were arrested in connection with the sad incident.

The suspects are still in Naval custody at Apapa.  Miss Yusuf who was at the SCID to entreat the police to wade into the murder case wondered why the naval authority has not released Moses and those who conspired to kill her baby named Happiness to the police for prosecution.
Her story: "I have known Joseph since last year, he was a next door neighbour to my elder sister and we started dating. Later in the year he came to me that he wanted to marry me and we went to see my family members in Lagos. He even bought some drinks and said it was introduction. Later I became pregnant and I told him but he said I must abort my four months old pregnancy but I refused.
"I started seeing another version of Joseph after I refused to terminate the pregnancy. Last year, I saw a woman with two children in Joseph's house and when I asked him, he said they were his late brother's children and wife.

It was later I discovered that the woman is his wife and the children are his. I left the barracks where I was staying and moved to Boundary at Ajegunle but before I left, he told me that he will not be responsible for my pregnancy which I did not mind.
"I went through a lot to take care of myself during the pregnancy and my family members were supporting me. After I gave birth to the baby on January 13, 2012, Joseph trailed me to the house at Boundary and forced me to hand over the baby to him. I refused and he started beating me up. It was neighbours who saved me from his hands. As if that was not enough, he came back the next day and demanded for the baby but I refused.

"He slapped me in the face and I fainted. He tried to take the baby away but my neighbours stopped him and hid the baby. I called my mother to come from the village after I regained consciousness.
"After her arrival, some hoodlums numbering eight, stormed my home, beat me and my mother up. Two of them held guns while the others had broken bottles and sharp objects which they used on me and my mother.  I hid my baby but they searched for her and grabbed her from me and ran away.
I ran after them shouting. That was when I saw Joseph on a bike parked ahead at the street. I called out to him to bring my baby, I saw their faces very well because there was light but Joseph refused. I called his phones but he did not answer."
Navy reacts: When contacted, the information officer of the Western Naval Command, Lieutenant Commander Omodara, said he was not aware of the incident saying he would make calls to authenticate the matter. He said: "I am not aware of this story you are telling me.  Let me find out and I will get back to you."
