Addressing journalists during the presentation of this year’s rainfall predictions, the Lagos state commissioner for environment, Mr Tunji Bello said the predictions reveal that the state is expected to record a very high intensity of rainfall this year.
“It has been predicted that there will 1279millimeters of rainfall in Lagos during the rainy season which is predicated to start on the 22nd of March and rain through till the 2nd of November” stated the commissioner of environment.
The Commissioner affirmed the predictions made so far by NIMET with “the heavy downpour record over the weekend on the 26th of March on the Island part of th city” he said
He further explained that “heavy rainfall is expected to fall in the state for 234-238 days between the months of March to August.”
Mr Bello therefore warned residents to desist from dumping refuse in unauthorised places, especially the drains and assured that the state government has commenced the massive clearing of drainage channels.
He also noted that the state government has rolled out plans to address the expected natural disaster with a three prone strategy which are; Pre rain strategy (from January to April), the Mid rain strategy (May-August) and the Post rain strategy (September-December).
