Lagos State Government has shut the popular Apapa Amusement Park and demolished many structures in the park, citing environmental and security concerns for its action.
State Task Force on Environmental, which carried out the demolition, stormed the park at 8:30 a.m, yesterday and commenced the demolition with a team of policemen, who accompanied the taskforce officials and bulldozers to the park, after taking control of the area.
The team could not commence demolition at the centre until about 10 a.m.
During the demolition exercise, no fewer than 44 buildings were affected, including a building housing the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the park.
Chairman of the Task Force, Mr Bayo Suleiman, who led the operation that lasted several hours, said the action was taken to return the park to its former glory.
Suliamon explained that those who were handed the management of the park had converted some section of the recreation part to burial ground for their dead relatives.
He said “there is no way government would have come here to bury someone. There was also growing concerns of security,” reminding that the state government will compromise its security policy. He added that some of property and parts of the land had been.
Sources gathered that as early as 7 am, some shop owners hurried to their shop to make last minute evacuation of their goods, including burglaries, roof sheets and office furniture.
However, Managing Director of Parkway Ride and Services Limited, manager of the Park, Mrs. Mac Authur, said the state government only gave them a 48-hour notice, adding that there was no justification for the state government’s action. it is only in this country that maintenance culture is zero, i just pray that after the demolition exercise, the Governor should rebuild the recreation centre to meet up with international standard and also with a sound maintenance culture in place.
