JAMB approves extended time for albinos in UTME

Albinos are to enjoy additional two hours in future Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) examinations.

JAMB’s registrar Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde disclosed this yesterday.
The JAMB boss said that henceforth, the Board will classify Albinos as virtually impaired persons.

Speaking at the briefing of its officials for the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Ojerinde said the decision is informed by the peculiar sight problem associated with albinism.

This development, he said, underscored the need for all examination bodies to do whatever they can to help these vulnerable persons.

His words: “For us in JAMB, we are trailing the blaze by incorporating the eye problem of the group into our examination planning”.
He further said that in no distance future JAMB is determined to provide Albinos with magnifying lenses to help them bolden type faces of words for examinations.

While calling on other examination bodies in Nigeria and the continent to do same, the Registrar according to a statement issued in Abuja by the Assistant Director Press, Timothy Oyedeji, added that a lot of Nigerians are ignorant of the peculiar problems especially their eyes and sight associated with albinism.
Albino’s Foundation helmsman, Jake Epelle commended JAMB for far reaching innovations most especially its decision to officially categorise and treat Albinos as visually impaired persons.

He assured that he would mobilise all albinos and indeed visually impaired persons to support JAMB in its quest to add-value to educational development.
A member of the Albino Foundation, Dr. Nnoye Edi, also an eye specialist had done a presentation on “Albinism and Sight”.
She identified defective retina, skin pigmentation as some of the factors making it difficult for albinos to see properly.

  2. I only hope that non albinos will not hijack this and abuse it by becoming 'black albinos' just to benefit from the extended time. Thanks to JAMB for the innovation.
