The Chairman of Daar Communication Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, has said he is no longer indebted to Fidelity Bank Plc.
His lawyer, Mr. Mike Ozekhome, told a Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday that his client had paid the bank N4.2bn with about N1bn already mopped up by the bank from his client’s assets.
Ozekhome said, “My Lord adjourned till today for report of settlement. However, in between, the petitioner went before Justice Charles Archibong and obtained a judgment based on facts agreed on by the parties.
“On the basis of that, we paid them N4.2bn and they have already mopped up about N1bn from our assets. That translates to N5.2bn.
“We were even expecting them to come to court today for the matter to be settled, only for us to realize a few days ago that they brought another affidavit claiming we are owing them N3.3bn. As far as we are concerned we have settled our indebtedness.”
The court presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris, in a judgment on Monday, ordered that Dokpesi and Daar Communication should pay the sum of N7.5bn and the accrued interest as claimed by the bank in its writ of summons.
The bank claimed that the money was an outstanding loan it granted Daar Communications Plc, the parent company of the Independent African Television and Ray Power radio, to enable it to broadcast the FIFA Under-17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria in 2009.
The judge delivered the judgment in a debt recovery proceedings initiated against the defendants by the bank.
The claim by Dokpesi’s lawyer before the court on Thursday that he had settled his indebtedness to the bank, was made in a separate winding up proceeding initiated against Daar Communication.
