I almost died on Mount Kilimanjaro – Funmi Iyanda

Funmi Iyanda
Television talkshow personality and journalist, Ms. Funmi Iyanda, has recounted how she almost died on a charity climb up Mount Kilimanjaro.

She joined 32 other personalities to climb Africa’s higesht mount as part of an advocacy effort for women’s rig on March 5.
The project was organised by the Africa UNiTE campaign group as part of a crusade to end violence against women and girls.

Other climbers included South African rock band, the Parlotones; South African actress, Rosie Motene; human rights lawyer, Ann Njogu; Congolese singer, Barbara Kanam; and many other African women and men. They were expected to arrive at Africa’s highest summit on Thursday, which fell on International Women’s Day.

In a tweet on Saturday evening, Funmi said she just decended the mountain after five days of hiking and climbing for 10 hours a day through rain forest, tundra, then artic regions.
Funmi said she had no bath and was equipped with bare necessities, climbing at 20 degrees in a winding ascent.

She said she vomitted, diarhoea, sleep apnea and dizziness.

“I am frost beaten, sun burnt and almost died but it is the most life altering experience of my life. Still struggling to assimilate all. I can’t walk and my fingers are still frozen so each word hurts,” she wrote.

In response to a tweet from a follower, she said she was still in Arusha, Tanzania at the last reception for the team.

But she described the journey as an “indescribable experience.”

She added, “Thanks all. Tell you the blow by blow but please let me get home, get the blood back in my fingers/toes and walk upright again. Information will be static for now.

“I did feel like an orphan as others were in groups with support from their governments. l was alone but I came off even more resolved about Nigeria.
“I will never ever give up on what matters, never but I will proceed pole pole (more later) till I conquer. Will also never take no anymore.
“I was cut off completely. Nothing prepares one for that mountain. Nothing. At a point, l questioned my sanity. I wept many times.”
