Hundreds of people were rendered homeless on Tuesday when the FCT Development Control Department demolished what it described as “illegal structures” in Galadimawa off Airport Road, Abuja.
The affected residents scrambled to pack their belongings from their buildings while others watched in amazement as their homes were pulled down.
Galadimawa village is home to many civil servants, police officers, artisans and jobless individuals who cannot afford the exorbitant rents charged by landlords in other parts of Abuja.
The exact number of demolished structures could not be immediately ascertained.
A resident, Donald Ukawe, said he was at work when he got a telephone call that his home was about to be demolished.
He explained that he had to leave some personal effects that he could not salvage, noting that his friends assisted him to carry things like fridges, television and his clothes.
“I pity those who were not at home when the demolitions took place because their belongings would be destroyed. We were able to salvage the property of a few neigbours who were not at home when the demolitions took place,” Ukawe explained Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
