A fire outbreak on Friday morning burnt down a staff room, 15 classrooms and a resource centre at Barewa College in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Those who visited the school after the fire incident say that the fire destroyed all learning materials in the burnt classrooms.
Eye witnesses say that the inferno started around 3:00a.m. early Friday, lasting for more than three hours.
According to the witnesses, it took the intervention of good Samaritans to put off out the fire.
The Principal of the College, Malam Mohammed Abbass-Aliyu, confirmed the incident when contacted, saying that the cause of the fire outbreak was yet to be known.
Malam Mohammed added that the college had set up a committee to determine the cause of the inferno, saying that the committee was to be headed by Malam Tanimu Tanko, the Vice Principal, Academics of the college.
The principal appealed to both staff and students of the college to remain calm as necessary actions were being put in place to ensure normalcy in the college.
According to Wikipedia, Barewa College, originally known as “Katsina College” was founded in 1922 by British Governor General Hugh Clifford, It switched its name to “Kaduna College” in 1938 and then “Government College, Zaria” in 1949 before settling on “Barewa College.” It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most celebrated post primary school in Northern Nigeria up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region that passed through the school’s academic buildings and counts among its alumni, five of whom were at one time Nigerian Heads of State including the late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.The dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram has turned to burning schools in some states in northern Nigeria as part of their bloody terror campaign in Nigeria.
