FG, Boko Haram talks collapse

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, SCSN, which is negotiating with the Federal Government on behalf of the Boko Haram sect on how to put an end to the spate of bombing in the country has accused the Federal Government of insincerity on the peace initiative which has led to the collapse of the talks between both parties.

President of the council, Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmad and the Secretary, Mr Nafiu Baba-Ahmed represented the sect in the talks with government team. A statement issued, yesterday, by Dr Datti, however, explained why the talks broke down.

According to Datti, “as a concerned elder and President of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, SCSN, I felt very disturbed with the turn of events and the increasing cycle of massive violence in our country, and especially in the Northern and Muslim part of Nigeria. We in the SCSN, therefore, made enquiries as to how to reach the current leadership of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnati Lidda Awati wal Jihad, otherwise known as Boko Haram.

“Our enquiries led us to a reporter who we realised maintained close and valuable professional contact with leadership of the sect. Through this gentleman, we contacted the leadership of the sect and established from them that as Muslims they were prepared to consider ‘Sulhu’ which means ‘broad reconciliation’ regarding the dispute between them and the government.

“It was at this juncture, that I and the Secretary General of the SCSN, on behalf of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria contacted the Federal Government at the highest level and intimated them of this great possibility of reconciliation and peaceful resolution of the crisis. This was on Monday, March 5, 2012.

“My delegation was well received and a high-ranking civilian officer was appointed immediately to liaise with us towards a successful resolution of the crisis. To our shock and dismay, no sooner had we started this dialogue, Nigerian newspapers came out with a lot of the details of the meeting held.

“This development has embarrassed us very much and has created strong doubts in our minds about the sincerity of the government’s side in our discussion as the discussion is supposed to be very confidential to achieve any success.

“In view of this unfortunate and unhelpful development, we have no option but to withdraw from these early discussions. We sincerely regret that an opportunity to negotiate and terminate this cycle of violence is being missed.”

It was, however, gathered that another reason why the Boko Haram representatives backed down from the talks was the reluctance by the Federal Government to release top shots of the sect from custody. The government was said to be preparing the release of some of the foot soldiers of the Islamic sect while still holding on to the sect leaders who have been arrested.

  1. I do not see why the Federal Government of Nigeria should hold any form of negotiation with terrorists. Be bold to tell the people you (Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmad and the Secretary, Mr Nafiu Baba-Ahmed) are representing that their activities are evil and must be stopped immediately.

  2. The Federal Government must probe thes supreme council on sharia. They have made useful comments that should be traced especially the reporter they said has access to the sect.
I advice government not to succum to any intimidation. Nigeria is greater than any one individual or group. Silence or patience should NOT BE MISTAKEN FOR WEAKNESS. They should be made to take note. Boko Haram and its collaborators and allies do not mean good for nigeria. Government must get to the root of these collaborators.

  3. This so-called meeting means that there are people who know these Boko Haram guys. The arrogance of withdrawing from a superior negotiator means that the facilitators have strong sympathies with the terrorists. Or, would they prefer I call them 'freedom fighters'? This 'Supreme Council' people do not see the efforts of the FG in bending over backwards in talking to these terrorists. The job of the journalists is to ferret out information. It doesn't need to be leaked for journalists to get at it. I was one, and I know. You cannot get an airtight deal with the government when you have no statutory standing. The Shariah people seem to think they have a constitutional standing within the government. The FG condescends to talk to people who have provocatively killed several innocent people and someone (in another report) has the temerity to compare them to the Delta insurgents. Would the seriousness FG was to show mean agreeing that Nigeria should close all secular schools, ban Christianity, proclaim the Shariah law. and introduce purdah? Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmad and the Secretary, Mr Nafiu Baba-Ahmed must not lay blame for any failing on the FG. They did not start this, and it doesn't have to end at their behest. Nigeria must not be held at ransom by Islamic groups or jihaddists as their name seem to imply. Some people in the North seem to be blaming the FG for the debacle of the Nigerian state. Do they forget that we are where we are today through the mismanagement of our common patrimony by past government dominated by northerners? let's get real!

  5. God will use them to destroy that which they build with our wealth, though with some casualties from our side (our own sacrifice)before we finally sit down and dicus how we should go our different way.
We dont fight for our God, instead he fight for us, because power belong to him and him alone.
    I thank God that i'm a Christian.
My God neither sleep nor slumber.

  6. My people, this is a clear indication that our government is confused. come to think of it how can somebody who has been killing and maiming innocent people be called for negotiation? it baffles me that there is no rule of law in this country. tomorrow another Haram will spring up from nowhere and the government will call for negotiation. na wah n

  9. Intelligence/strategic plan is one of the best tools to win a war. Boko Haram declared war against all Nigerian because those being maimed are neither in Government nor at the Government's corridor. There is no justification for any dialogue after all the damages that have been perpetuated by the group. They should realise that they have devastated some family forever. The Federal Government should beef up its intelligence gathering and win this war on time. Some comments here constitute hasty generalization fallacy. The fact that one Nigerian citizen deals in drug would not make all Nigerian criminals. Please watch your comment on religion.

  10. why are we shying away from the truth, why would someone come out boldly to negotiate for murderers, demons, threat to lives call the BOKO FOOLS if he claims that he is not one of their sponsors. in fact it is high time for "an eye for an eye", Christians should fight back, let leave the government out of this. enough is enough!

  11. The actions taken by the Federal Government is laudable and should be commended; but enough of this arrogance on the part of these terrorists. Nigeria is greater than any individual or group of individuals who are capable of distracting the attention of the Federal Government from pursuing noble activities that would bring about progress and tranquility to the country. Let the Federal Government come out boldly that not an inch of Nigeria is going to be conceded to any Boko Haram and their godfathers! Nigeria remains one and no weapon formed against its very existence shall prosper.
