Corruption is the system where equals are treated unequally – Jonathan

Yenagoa - President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said corruption is the system where equals are treated unequally he made this statement when he pledged that the Federal Government would ensure even distribution of developmental projects among the states.

The President made the pledge at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new ultra-modern federal secretariat complex at the Oxbow Lake in the Central Business District of Yenagoa.

Jonathan said the government was committed to the principle of equality and fairness as it remained sacrosanct in the provision of infrastructure in the country.

Recalling a book he read some time ago, the President said “corruption is the system where equals are treated unequally and unequals treated equally. And that is the sign of corruption”.

He said this could probably be one of his driving forces and assured Nigerians that no state would be left from benefitting from federal educational institution and public infrastructure.

“The driving force of my administration is to ensure all state capitals are treated equally in terms of public facilities and viable infrastructure. Our interest is to make sure that Nigeria is uniformly developed.”
He, therefore, added that when completed, the new edifice would bring to 29 the number of federal secretariats in Nigeria.

He added that the move was aimed at providing an enabling and conducive environment for federal civil servants.

“We will build federal secretariats in all the states of the federation where we have our staff because there is the need to provide conducive environment for them to work.

“Civil servants, especially the senior ones spend more of their time in the office. The office must be befitting and conducive so that even if you stay there for five hours running, you will not feel like leaving.

“That is the drive of the government and we will make sure that it is done.”
Earlier, Ms Ama Pepple, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, said the ceremony was a celebration of another milestone in the annals of history of Bayelsa.

She said “it is one of the series of inauguration ceremonies for the construction of federal secretariats in six states, namely Adamawa, Gombe, Osun, Bayelsa, Zamfara and Nasarawa”.
She added that the secretariat was expected to be completed within three years.

Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa commended the Federal Government “for showing real presence in Bayelsa”.
He, however, sued for prompt release of funds to ensure the speedy completion of the project.
