Lagos State Government on Thursday said it would
begin to clamp down on hotels, fun joints and other places habouring
underage children, who are being used for prostitution and other vices.
The state government, which said it would comb the
streets to rescue children being used for street trading, added that
underage children in private homes being used as house helps would also
be rescued.
It said adults, who were promoting the vices and
abusing children, especially via sexual harassment, should be ready to
serve seven years jail term.
The state Deputy Governor, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire,
conveyed the decision of the government at a news conference on the
prevention of child abuse at Alausa, Ikeja.
She explained that the government had declared zero
tolerance for all forms of child abuse and would enforce the state’s
Child Rights Law.
She said, “A child has the right to be born,
educated, enjoy good health and so on. Anything contrary is an abuse and
the state government is ready to enforce that the right of the child is
respected.
“If you harass the child anyway, especially through
sexual abuse, you will go to jail for seven years according to the Child
Right Law. It is against the law for anyone to deny a child the right
to education, good life and freedom of association.”
The deputy governor said the government would arrest
syndicates and cartels that deceived youngsters to come to Lagos for
greener pastures but later forced them into prostitution and child
labour.
She urged residents of the state to report every
cases of child labour and abuse, particularly sexual abuse to the
appropriate authorities for necessary action.
