Rochas Okorocha Wins At Supreme Court

The Supreme Court, on Friday morning, upheld the election of Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA ) as Governor of Imo State.

Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, while delivering his judgement, cited Section 285 (7) of the constitution, which required that judgment must be delivered within 60 days.
The Supreme Court also nullified the appeal court's  judgment and upheld the judgment of the Imo State Governorship Election Tribunal, which earlier declared Okorocha as the winner of the election.

Ngwuta said although the Court of Appeal delivered its judgment within 60 days, it failed to give reasons for its judgment within the stipulated time, hence rendering it null.

It will be recalled that the Court of Appeal gave their judgement on January 06, 2012, and waited till January 24, 2012 before giving an explanation for the ruling.

Ngwuta said the act was an infringement on the constitution and therefore invalidated the judgment and reinstated the judgment of the Imo state Governorship Election Tribunal.

Ikedi Ohakim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Governor of the State, had challenged Okorocha's victory at the state's gubernatorial election

  1. Put this behind us all, and have a handshake. Imo State is bigger both of you. We don't the time to dissipate energy any longer on election squabbles. OK? Ohakim, please call Rochas, and offer your hand of fellowship as a way of urging your supporters to drop the gauntlets of battle. We must forge ahead. Up Imonites!
