10 investors propose to revive Apapa amusement park

Few days ago the Lagos State Government shut the popular Apapa Amusement Park and demolished many structures in the park, citing environmental and security concerns for its action.

Days later after demolishing the Apapa Amusement Park, the Lagos State government has received about 10 proposals from interested investors willing to rebuild the park. The investors are promising to return it to its original design. The park, the government promised, will soon be reopened.

The Commissioner for Tourism and Intergovernmental relations Mr Disun Holloway who made these known on Wednesday, said government is committed to bringing in serious investors who would be willing to provide world class service to residents of the state.

Throwing more light on why the government moved against the previous management, the commissioner said the action was informed by the park’s dwindling fortunes. He said a large portion of the park had been sold by unscrupulous persons and part of it also fenced out and being used as cemetery.

"We have to move in to prevent a major calamity. You know the entire Apapa area is on a low table land and we gathered that they might have been burying people there. Such an act would contaminate the underground water and put the entire area under threat. What we want in that place was a park and not a cemetery, and we are looking for people who would work with us to return that place to its original concept," the Commissioner said.

Holloway said the site had over the years become an eyesore, lamenting what was conceived as a park has given way to all manners of artisan shops.

"Originally the park was on 22 and half acres of land and as at the time we pulled it down it has been reduced to 12 acres. We have 110 shops in that place, and a part was fenced off where we gathered people have started burying their dead.” That is unacceptable. I was appalled when I went there last year and discovered that concrete slabs have now replaced the rides for children
