Subsidy: Lagos unions to reduce fares

Stakeholders in the transport sector in Lagos State led by National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, and affiliated unions, have announced the downward reduction on cost of transportation in the state.
The fares charge range from N10, N50, N150, N200 and N300 respectively, depending on the routes.
Recently, cost of transportation had increased astronomically  across the country following the partial removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government from N65 to N97.

Consequently, transporters raised cost of transportation in the state from N50 to N100; N80 to N120; N100 to N150; N200 to N300; N800to N1300 and N900 to N1500 when the price of Premium Motor Spirits(PMS) was jerked up from N65 to N141 before crashing fares  from N120 to N110; N200 to N190; N300 to N280; N1300 to N1200 and N1500 to N1300 respectively when the price of PMS was brought down to N97.

Reading from the communiqué signed by chairmen Lagos State  NURTW, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria(RETAN), and head of other transport unions at a press conference in Lagos at the weekend, Chairman of NURTW Comrade Akin James, said that the reduction was reached at a meeting held with officials of the Lagos State Government, stakeholders on the need to reduce the cost of transportation from the current price.

Speaking on the new development, James told reporters that a monitoring team has been put in place to ensure that the new fares are implemented across all parks in the state.
In his remarks, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, said the new fares compared to the pre N141 era  is not more than 20 percent,  adding that government did not force the stakeholders to come down to the new fares.
He appealed to petty traders not to raise cost of goods by 100 percent since it has a way of coming back to each and everyone.

Opeifa said: “So we are appealing to you that the price of garri, yam and others should not be increased just like that.”
