According to the fresh reports reaching us, security agents have Today, Thursday, 16th february 2012 re-arrested 25 of the 118 inmates of Koton Karfi Prison in Kogi State, who fled after gunmen attacked the penitentiary.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that an intense manhunt is under way for the remaining inmates.
The gunmen invaded the prison just after 7p.m on Wednesday, killing a prison guard.
Spokesman for the Nigerian Prison Service, Kayode Odeyemi, told the Associated Press that the motive of the attackers was yet to be ascertained.
He also said it was yet clear if they were actually out to to free members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect.
"One does not really know why. It might be that some of the armed robbers are trying to free the armed robbers there awaiting trial," Odeyemi said.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, which is being investigated by security agencies.
