The Ogun state government has stripped the immediate former governor,
Otunba Gbenga Daniel of the ownership right to the Golf Resort hotels
and Gateway Front Foundation without compensation.
Gateway Front Foundation was the pet project initiated by the wife of
the former governor, Mrs Funke Daniels shortly after the administration
was inaugurated in 2003 while the Golf Resort hotels are privately
owned hotesl opened by Mr Daniel whilst serving as the governor of the
state.
The incumbent state government alleges that “state funds were used to build the two facilities.”
The government has also taken over the Gateway hotels in Ijebu-ode
and Otta which were concessioned to private companies by the erstwhile
administration for non-performance. The Daniel’s administration had
privatized the state owned hotels due to non-efficiency.
The revocation and confiscation followed a white paper issued on the
first report of the judicial commission of inquiry into all land
allocations, acquisition, sale and concessions of government property
and administrations between January 2004 and May 29, 2011.
The special committee, chaired by the Deputy governor Segun Adesegun,
was mandated to look into the allegations that state resources were
used to build the hotels.
The state government also recently rescinded the policy of the former
governor by changing the nation’s premier university of education, the
Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) to a department of
Education with the state university.
A ruling by an Ogun state High Court has however thwarted the policy,
ordering the state government not to proceed with the conversion.
Mr Daniel is currently standing trial for money laundering and
financial mis-appropiation while he was the governor of Ogun state from
2003 to 2007.
