Lagos State Shuts Down Seven Churches Over Noise Pollution

image

The Lagos State Government has shut down the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic  Revival Ministry and six other churches in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria over noise pollution. Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA stormed a branch of the Lord’s Chosen Church at 25 Omobola Street, Lawanson, Surulere area at the weekend and shut it down.

Other affected churches are Bible Church, FESTAC; The Chapter of Christ Church, Oregun, Ikeja; Assemblies of God Church, Ikeja; The Golden Gate Church, Ifako-Ijaiye and Seek and Save Ministry, Abule Egba.
The closure of the churches is coming after pre-sanction notices were given to the churches to abate the noise pollution emanating from their worship centres. General Manager, LASEPA, Engr. Rasheed Shabi said the closure of the churches became imperative after several abatement notices issued to them were disregarded.
According to him, some of the churches even rebuffed meetings called by the agency on how to resolve the issue. “The agency’s stance is clear on issue of noise pollution level permitted. This has been communicated to all worship centres in the state”.
“The level of noise pollution allowed in the state is between 55 decibel during the day and 42 to 45 decibel at night,” he said. Shabi said the state government was determined to reduce noise pollution in the state because of the anomalies and diseases related to it.
Engr. Rasheed Shabi enjoined worship centres in the state to comply with the state’s standard on noise, while suggesting the use of sound proof equipment by churches to reduce noise during their worship services.

  5. I'm also a christian but we should not mix up religion with this issue of noise pollution which is detrimental to human health there is a way these religious houses could position their loudspeaker and it won't disturb the neighbourhood,it is not good disturbing others all in the name of religion

  6. Instead of Sending the Fire of God to the man or doing his Job. if you hear a mosque with noise levels above those mentioned by the agency, then it is your duty to report to them and see if action will not be taken. Church, Mosque, Ifa priest, Nobody should Disturb the peace in the whole area in the name of Religion

  7. If the churches were servung God in truth....then Engr. Saheed..u are in big trouble...HOWEVER if their worship was basically human activity to showcase themselves, they are in trouble. As much as I dont like noise, I honestly wonder how you can control the move of the Holy Spirit in a worship session.

  8. I know a mosque that has speakers disturbing the houses living close to it, General Manager, LASEPA, Engr. Rasheed Shabi cannot sincerely say that he is not aware that quite a number of mosques also constitute themselves a nuisance to the local populace. It is so easy to accuse this man of bias, please be even handed and prevent this action as laudable as it is from blowing up into something else or is the agency not empowered to shut down erring mosques or is lasepa afraid?

  9. Especially the night vigils...not just noisy but also permeate fornication and adulteration..pray in your house at night...and let the people sleep

  10. Lagos is an industrialized state... This noise they're talking about, is it from the church only? What about the ones emaneting from big plants from various businesses & factories? Hope there're no foul play here?

  11. Mr LASEPA, you are an anti-christ. Why should you close churches only. Mosques make worse noise. Close Them down as well.

To all church and mosque leaders, don't use your religion to disturb your neighbours.

  13. I am surprised at the way he - Engr. Rasheed shabi- kept emphasizing on churches. What about the noise caused by those selling cds', vcds' etc along the road? What about Mosques? Let the policy be across the board and not just focusing on a particular group.

  14. Idiots they should go to hell. U can't stop God's move. Lagos is always a noisy place. Why giving boko haram reason to continue fighting christians. Am sure the engr is a Muslim. Respect ur self and do what is right. you should have to wait for the crises in Nigeria to reduce b4 carrying out your plan, u are increasing the fear and creating awareness of Nigerian dividing.

    Kolo mental dey worry him.

  22. The sanctions on these churches should serve as a detertent to every church and mosques. Our God is not a deaf God!!! When the consistent and persistent noises from these worship places pose as threats and nuisance to the neighbourhood, I strongly believe God is being mocked instead of being worshipped. I want to use this medium to crave the indulgence of the Governor to please look into the activities of some hotels around Ajao Estate, some of them run night clubs in the heart of residential areas always blurring their music to the highest level thereby always giving the neighbourhood sleepless nights.

  23. It is a pity that what is now happening in the Northern part of the Country is gradually coming to the West, and Lagos State in particular. Pls prepare yourselves for another Hisba/Sharia State. Who can battle with the Lord?...is it the Governor or LASEPA?.Lagosians, beware of your people.

  30. I am not against the policy of the agency about the noise level in Lagos. But I wonder why it is only the Churches that are shut down. Is it the only churches that generate noise in Lagos? What about the Mosque especially early morning? What of the studio record centres, big factories, motor park? etc.

I think the man involved as a hidden agenda. If he want to follow the policy to letter. It is not only the churches that should be affected.

  31. Again, i'll like to remind us that "education" could be "formal" or "informal". Unfortunately, both are at their very lowest ebbs in this beloved country of ours. For me, this is the reason many Nigerians ( disappointingly youths - the supposed "think-tanks" whether formally educated or otherwise) can/have no longer permit(ed) objective reasoning to issues without whipping unnecessary sentiments ranging from ethnic quagmire to religious bias. Common sense, albeit uncommon in our society, will tell anyone that "noise" is a form of environmental pollution which should be discouraged irrespective of the sources (maybe that will give room to a slight moment of sanity to the sound mind). Other sources of noise pollution we need to stop playing blind or deaf to include VCD/DVD shops or their mobile counterparts, unnecessary car horn, unnecessary siren blaring e.t.c. As Abraham Lincoln wrote to his son's teacher that he should kindly teach his son to listen to all men, objectively sieve what he has heard with his mind and then choose what he thinks are good for him and discard others. I simply crave your indulgence to approach every issue with at least a pinch of objectivity whether you are a Christian , Muslim or atheist.

  32. This place of worship noise-making is too rampant in Nigeria, and it has to be controlled. It is not only noise but other sundry hardship and inconvenience usually visited on hapless local people especially by churches.

As Pastor Ashimolowo. His was not given planning permission to build a church in East London because of the hardship and inconvenience it will be bring to the local people by the sheer number of worshippers envisaged.

It is time we start putting sentiments and other frivolities aside, and do what is right and proper.

  33. Engr. Saheed, you are well done,Those that shout while calling God are hypocrites. You dont need to shout before calling God if indeed u are pius.Continue to close down the churches or mosques that can be described as cosmetic in nature. As we have cosmetic christians ,so also we have cosmetic Muslims. They are using religion to deceive people.Lagos is the most religeous and most corrupt state in Nigeria. Therefore they are hypocrites.

  34. Please I live at Oladogba street ikosi. I am surrounded by Mosques and churches. Most of them make noise above 100 decibels day and night, especially on Sundays...LASEPA please come and warn them o. Infact sef come and close them kia kia.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am not a muslim yet I believe that churches are noisy. If you think that a nearby mosque is constituting a nuisance (noise pollution)simply go and report and see if action will be taken. There is no need to start making noise about the LASEPA man doing his job because he is a muslim.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I GUESS HE HAS FORGOTTEN THAT MORE NOISE EMANATE FROM MOSQUES THAN CHURCHES, LETS SEE HOW IT GOES.
THE BATTLE IS ON AND WE WILL ALL SEE WHO IS GOD

    ReplyDelete
  37. This is really amazing. Has Lagos suddenly become a religious-crisis state? I am a christian but I chose to be objective. You don't quench the fire in someone else' house when yours is on fire. We have more pressing issues in this country, especially Lagos at the moment- unemployment, poverty level, no pipe-borne water, electricity, bad roads, poor education(statistics claim that 70% of students didn't have up to 5 credits including maths n English in WAEC) e.t.c and of course the menace BOKO HARAM. We are not through with the recent fuel subsidy removal and the negative effects on our economy and now this. Pls Lagos State Government, noise pollution is the least of our problems right now. Why not provide a lasting solution to those lost their homes to the heavy downpour last week. Lets leave churches, mosques, worshippers and face the main issues.
Going spiritual now, should this policy be carried out as a result of good governce, then combat noise pollution in the whole of Lagos. But should it Islamic, then you've incurred the wrath of God.

  38. Don't deceive yourselves. Can any one tell me any where in the bible where Jesus christ goes about in the street of jerusalem or in the temple disturbing peaple with noise, either in the day time or night. If truely you beleive in him, you should emulate him.
In Islam is on record both in the Holy Qurian and Hadiths of the prophet Muhammad (p)that call to prayers is said aloud. Any excesses on the part of the muslim should be reported to the necessary authority. Thanks.

  39. It's a pity when a mere man thinks he can fight God. The man who sees worship of the Almighty as noise should be careful. Those of you who presume to twach Christians how to worship (in the closet) are ignorant of the difference btw prayer and corporate worship. Quietly go and open those churches before a week to avoid a sure retribution. Furthermore. you should know that we have enough tension now in Nigeria to tolerate this newfangled jihad against Go"s people. We are acutely in remembrance of those that died in the Christmas bombing because. like you, they couldn't countenance other people worshiping God as they chose. It's a most unwise step yo take at this time/
