A Bus Rapid Transit bus operated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority on the Ikorodu Road route in Lagos caught fire on Monday morning at the Onipanu stop.
The bus was filled with passengers as it ran the usual Monday morning shuttle inward Ojota when the alarm was raised that a part of the vehicle was on fire.
The driver swiftly brought the bus to a halt while passengers made a frantic dash for the doors. The situation also caused a panic at the stop, as LAMATA officials mobilised fire extinguishers and stopped the fire from spreading.
They were later joined by the state fire service.
An eyewitness said the fire was caused by overheating of the engine of the BRT bus.
When our correspondent arrived at the bus-stop, the vehicle had been moved to the agency’s office at Ojota.
An official of LAMATA, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
He said, “The cause of the fire could not be ascertained all we heard was a loud noise from the passengers that there was a fire. But there was a quick response by the people around.
“We put our fire extinguishers to use and we were able to put out the fire even before the state fire fighters arrived at the scene.
“None of the passengers on board sustained any injury. The bus was later moved to our yard for a thorough check.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
