James Iroha, a.k.a. Gringory, dies at 69

Veteran Nigerian actor Chief James Akwari Iroha Popularly known as "GRINGORY" reportedly died yesterday at the age of 69.

Known for his part in the popular 80s Nigerian television show "New Masquerade", where he reprised the role of Gringory, Ihora was said to have suffered an eye ailment in the years before his death.

Before his death, Gringory was living in abject poverty and cried out in vain for rehabilitation.


He was said to be suffering from an eye ailment.

His son, Akwari James Iroha, confirmed Gringory's death in a post on Facebook

"Not long ago a man we have all come to love, a man that has made us laugh, a friend to all but will always be Dad to my little sister Ugonma, my brothers Chiemela, Uche, Kelechi and me passed on."

He is third member of the popular comedic soap to have passed on. Christy Essien Igbokwe, who played the role of Apena and Claude Ake, also known as Jegede Sokoya also passed on.

James Iroha was only months shy of his 70th birthday.

  4. Rest His soul, oh Lord! He was among those who practiced art for the love of art. They gave all for pittance just to make people happy.In the end Govt recognition came in the form of national award, which was WORTH nothing. A man who distinguished himself and was honoured by his country should reap basic benefits.His well being should at least been of interest to those who honoured him. I think that is the honourable thing to do. Rest in Peace, sir.

  5. "... He cried out for help..." When will Nigerians help some one in need, especially from such organization. Now that the man is dead,so many have come out to eulogize him... too bad.
