Tribute to a courageous, resourceful and fearless reporter

On October 3, 2011, Enenche Akogwu on his facebook wall wrote, "I still cannot stand Boko Haram onslaught."
He said this after one of his friends teased him about being very prepared to face the Boko Haram sect because he (Akogwu) just finished a media training in Kenya that focused on covering conflict situations.
Just three months after the facebook post, the 31- year- old Channels TV reporter was consumed in Friday's onslaught on Kano city by the dreaded sect.

According to Channels Television website, Akogwu, who hails from Aiodio, Otikpa District of Ogbadiibo, Benue State, was shot by unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, outside the Kano State government house while in the line of duty.
He was described as a resourceful and fearless reporter, and had gone to cover the aftermath of the bomb blast, when he was felled by bullets.

Akogwu graduated from Benue State University in 2005 and joined Channels Television as a reporter in Abuja, about two years ago. He was later made the Kano State correspondent for Channels.
He had covered the northern region; reporting breaking stories and events across the troubled region and won the Channels Television's 2011 Chairman's award for his outstanding contributions.
Akogwu, who had returned to Kano, just two days before his death, has been described by his friends and colleagues as "a loss of one of the brightest Nigerian youths and a reflection of how lives are poorly valued in the country."

Similarly, Delta State governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, condemned Akogwu's killing, saying it was sad and disheartening that a defenceless young man could be brutally murdered in cold blood while performing his official duties lawfully.
However, probably most instructive was what Akogwu said about himself on his Facebook profile.
"My love for Nigeria has been a compelling impetus charting the course of my life; courageous in the face of adversities, hopeful when confronted with despair, and delighted when the society makes appreciable progress," he said.

His favourite quote was, "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are born equal, and that they are endowed by their creators with certain inalienable rights which include right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness."

R.I.P Enenche Akogwu.
