Christmas: Jonathan, govs, clerics urge Nigerians to emulate Christ


President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday called on Nigerians to continue to support his administration in its bid to reposition this country.

Jonathan who said this in his Christmas message urged Nigerians to reflect on the themes of piety, love, honesty, patience, humility, selflessness and sacrifice for the good of all which dominates Biblical accounts of Christ’s mission on earth.

He thanked Nigerians who continue to keep faith with his administration as it strives to fulfill its promise of national transformation.


He added that the nation under his leadership would continue to work diligently to redirect national resources from wasteful and unproductive areas to identified priority sectors like infrastructure, power supply, job creation, education, agriculture, health and social services.

In his own message the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, said, “The fact that the Messiah was born in a humble manner in a manger and raised under difficult circumstances should teach the rich in our society lessons on humility and give the poor a cause for hope.”

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State also enjoined Christians in the country to remain committed to the ideals of Christmas as that is the only way to accord proper meaning to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

For the Bayelsa State governor, Timipre Sylva, Christmas is time for all to rededicate themselves to the moral values for which Christ came to the world. He urged Nigerians to renew their faith in democracy.

Similarly, his Anambra State counterpart, Governor Peter Obi, called on Nigerians to reflect on the message of salvation and practise the ideals of charity, love, peace and harmonious co-existence.

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in his message, urged Nigerians to show love and compassion to their neighbours as Christians in the country join others in the world to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, also charged Christians to learn to co-habit with other citizens with love, unity and peace for the continued existence of the country.                  

He said this when the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, visited the governor on Saturday before attending the “Go A Fishing” programme of the church.

Adeboye pledged his readiness to amend any of his programmes to pray for the Aregbesola’s administration.

In his own message, the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, called on Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of togetherness, peaceful co-existence and love towards one another so as to enhance growth and development.

Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara also charged Christians to reflect on the virtues and teachings of Jesus Christ in their lives, so that Nigeria could be a better place to live in.

Also admonishing Christians on Christmas, the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, urged Nigerians to draw closer to God, adding that Yuletide should not only be a time of merrymaking but a time for people to renew their commitments to Christ and to live good lifestyles.

Likewise, the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos and Bishop of Lagos, the Most Rev. Adebola Ademowo, called on the Federal Government to tackle the myriads of challenges currently facing the country in line with the significance of Christmas.
