The Lagos State
Police Command said that the 22 people arrested by the Rapid Response
Squad (RRS) on Wednesday were not members of Boko Haram sect.
Samuel Jinadu, the
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), told the News Agency
of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that investigations so far reveal that the
suspects were just local Islamic preachers.
Mr Jinadu spoke against the backdrop of some reports that the arrested people were members of the group.
The Police spokesman
said that the suspects, aged between 12 years and 45 years, were
intercepted when they were trekking from Omu town in Ogun toward Ketu in
Lagos State.
“When they were
questioned they were unable to give any satisfactory explanation about
their mission in Lagos. From investigations, they are local Islamic
preachers from Yorubaland.
“No weapon was found on them. They are currently still being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.
“They told the police that God directed them to come and preach Islam to the people of Lagos for a period of 25 days,” he said.
The PPRO denied that
they were connected to Boko Haram, urging Lagosians to not entertain
fears as they go about their normal activities.
