Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola has approved about 50 percent reduction in tuition fees paid by students of the Osun State University, Osogbo.
A statement by the state Commissioner
for Information and Strategy, Sunday Akere indicated that the new
tuition fees take effect from Monday 19th September, 2011.
Mr Aregbesola had, during the last
convocation of the university, promised to reduce the tuition fees of
all tertiary institutions in the state, and had since reduced those of
the state polytechnic, Iree, state College of Technology, Esa-Oke and
the colleges of Education in Ila-Orangun and Ilesa.
According to the statement "With effect
from Monday 19th September, 2011, students of the Faculty of Law and
Medicine will now pay a flat tuition of N100, 000 each as against N195,
000 currently charged reflecting a reduction of 49%.
"For those offering non-science courses
in the new tuition fee regime will be paying N75, 000 as compared to
N130, 000 being paid now reflecting a reduction of 42%.
Those offering science courses appear to
be the biggest beneficiary of the slash in tuition fees as they will
henceforth be paying N75, 000 instead of the N155, 000 being charged
them now showing a reduction of 52%."
Open to all
The commissioner stated that the
decision of the government to slash the tuition fees became imperative
in order to remove the toga of "elitist school" from the institution and
make it accessible to the children of the common man as well as not
adversely affect the quality and academic excellence for which the
institution is renowned for.
The management of the institution was
similarly advised to make adequate and immediate refund to all students
that might have been made to pay the old exorbitant tuition fee.
Mr Aregbesola also pledged an immediate
refund of funds belonging to the institution which he said were deducted
and kept in a safe.
