ASUU to embark on week-long industrial action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has issued a one-week strike notice to the Federal Government for the government's failure to implement the union's requests.
Addressing newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, the ASUU National President, Ukachukwu Awuzie, said that the strike would commence on Nov. 26.

Awuzie said the agreement yet to be implemented by government include the review of pension law to reflect the 70 years retirement age for academics in the professorial cadre.

Others include the implementation of the earned allowances component of the agreement and the union's demand for government to drastically improve funding of education in general and the universities in particular.
'NEC seizes this opportunity to call on all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly, our dear students and their parents, civil society and the organised labour movement to intervene and ensure that government honours this agreement.

'Otherwise, government is to be blamed for whatever additional action our union decides to take,`` Awuzie said.

'FGN has woefully failed in this regard and we urge it to address the matter urgently,' he said.
He said that about 122 enterprises were privatised since 1999, adding that many of the buyers did not bid or qualify for the sale.

The ASUU President called on the Senate, to as a matter of honour, make public the entire report of the probe of the privatisation scandal without further delay.

Awuzie called on all Nigerians to demand for the release of the investigation report and punishment of those found guilty of abuse or wrong doing.
