A trader, Aminu (surname withheld) on Tuesday bit off a finger of an official of the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline brigade, Mr. Badejo Babajide, at Allen Roundabout, Ikeja, while trying to escape after he was arrested.
The trader was allegedly caught in a prohibited area with his wares and was subsequently arrested by the officials who later took him and other offenders to KAI’s operational vehicle.
PUNCH METRO learnt that Aminu, who did not resist arrest, had asked for permission to urinate when most of the KAI officials had left the vehicle.
Suspecting that Aminu might escape, Babajide chose to follow him, yet the trader reportedly tried to run away and in the process, he bit off the KAI official’s finger.
Babajide said he was surprised at Aminu’s action and regretted that he had lost his finger while discharging his official duties.
He said, “We were on operation and when we got to Allen in Ikeja, we saw Aminu in a prohibited area. He was arrested and honestly he did not resist arrest in any way because he knew he was guilty.
“Suddenly, when the rest of my colleagues went after others, remaining just three of us, he started hitting the vehicle saying that he wanted to urinate. I knew it was just a ploy to escape. So, I tried opening the door to calm him down. As soon as I did this, he wanted to run away so I held on to him and the next thing I knew, he had bitten off my finger. I regret the fact that I have lost my finger while doing my duty.”
The commander of the brigade, Mr. Olusola Oyeyemi, said though the act was regrettable, it would not deter the officials from carrying out their responsibility of keeping the environment clean and ensuring that laws were obeyed.
He said, “Everybody is surprised at the action of Aminu. He violated the state law and he was arrested and the next thing he did to escape was to bite off the hand of my official.
“We will not give up on sanitising our society. It is for the good of all of us. We will not condone this bestial act and I can tell you now that he will be prosecuted because we have handed him over to the police at Alausa division.”
In the same vein, the Public Relations Officer of the agency, Mr. Tunde Olusesi, described the trader’s action as barbaric, wondering why Aminu resorted to such act.
Olusesi called on the members of the public to be law abiding, saying that laws were meant to protect them.
On his part, the KAI Marshal General and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environmental Matters, Capt. Maigari Danjuma, said 70 per cent of the populace were not responding to the environmental changes being introduced by the present administration.
He however said this would not discourage the agency from enforcing discipline whenever people erred.
Danjuma said re-organisation was going on in order to improve the agency’s operation and serve the people effectively.
He said, “I have done a lot of research but have not been able to come out with reasons why people chose to be non-conformist. I want to tell you today that almost 70 per cent of the populace is not obeying our environmental laws, which is really sad.
“On our part, we are re-organising the brigade with an improved professional training that will enable our personnel to be more efficient in their duty.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, who confirmed the incident, said it was under investigation.
