The deplorable condition of the Ore town end of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway has been forcing many commuters and motorists to spend hours on a spot in the last one month.
A deep gully in the middle of the road which deteriorated in June due to poor maintenance has worsened the plight of passengers and transporters.
Some of the passengers, who spoke with our correspondent on Tuesday, urged the Federal Government to be alive to its responsibilities.
A driver with a media organisation based in Lagos, Mr. Kola Akintade, said, “I normally arrive in Ore between 3am and 3.30am but I will not get out of the traffic until 9am at times. This situation is affecting my job and the sale of our newspapers is threatened. Government should do something urgently.”
An official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Benin, who pleaded anonymity, said he slept at Ore on Friday on his way to Lagos due to gridlock caused by the the poor state of the road in the town.
A commercial bus driver, Mr. Mathew Ojo, urged the Ondo State Government to ignore the ‘insensitivity’ of the Federal Government and direct its ministry of works to rehabilitate the bad portion of the road.
Investigation by our correspondent however revealed that the state might intervene and fix the portion of the road in the interest of the people.
A senior official of the ministry, who pleaded anonymity said, “I think the state government is considering an intervention like it did in some areas in the past. We cannot continue to watch the embarrassing situation. Something urgently will be done urgently.”
