How killers of Lagos banker was arrested

LAGOS — The Police at Agboju, Lagos, have recovered the dagger used in stabbing a bank manager, Mr Emeka Ohazuruike, to death, weekend, by an in-law to his debtor.
This was just as facts emerged that the disputed N11.8 million which the late bank manager loaned to his debtor, Onyekachi Idemili, was a personal loan and not from the bank.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with Vanguard alleged that the killing was pre-meditated as his assailant and his in-law were deliberately delaying payment of the loan which was obtained in 2009.   It was gathered that prior to the incident, the debtor’s father called for truce by issuing post-dated cheque to the bank manager.

However, the bank manger was said to have intensified efforts to recover his money after he was informed that his debtor, Onyekachi, a business man at the Trade Fair complex, Lagos, received a container worth N15 million and was about disposing the goods therein.  He, therefore, reportedly started pressing to get his money back. He threatened to get the police involved if his debtor failed to pay within one week.

Police sources said investigations so far revealed that last Friday, the suspects bought five knives and a new pair of jean trousers and shirts to disguise after perpetrating the act.
On Saturday morning, the bank manager was seen in their midst with three others outside the compound where all of them reside at Finiger Estate, Satellite Town discussing about the loan. Thereafter, the victim and his assailant, Kenneth, went out of the estate and bought  newspapers which they brought home and were seen reading them at the bank manger’s sitting room with a bottle of drink.

Vanguard learnt that moments later, the bank manager received a call and told Kenneth that he was heading for  Honda Place to pick his car.  He reportedly went into his room, removed his clothes and was about taking his bath when Kenneth sneaked into the sitting room with a knife and stabbed him repeatedly on the ribs and abdomen.  The bank manager was said to had slumped but his assailants kept on pushing his body into the bathroom.

Sources said at that stage,  a neighbour who manages another micro-finance bank sighted Kenneth struggling with Emeka inside the bathroom from an adjoining window and raised alarm which made Kenneth take to his heels.

The bank manager who was said to be bleeding profusely then ran out from the building and called for help.  Neighbours who saw him  rushed him to two nearby hospitals but he was rejected.  They then rushed him to the Naval hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Vanguard learnt that the crowd then went in search of his assailant and some policemen and later traced him at Maza-Maza bus stop where he was about boarding a bus to the East.

Meanwhile, the two suspects have been taken to the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID,  Panti, Yaba for further investigation.
