The construction of the 1,000 houses valued at N3.7 billion for the Sokoto flood victims is progressing steadily, according to the Secretary to the State Government, Sahabi Gada.
Mr Gada is also the chairman of the state’s committee for the collection and distribution of relief materials to the 2010 flood victims.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Wednesday that 400 houses would be built in Goronyo, 350 in Gada and 250 in Silame local government areas of the state respectively.
“The construction of the houses in Goronyo has reached an appreciable level of completion by the contracting firm, M/S Sundriva Limited.
“Some of the houses in Goronyo have reached lintel level, while others are at various stages of completion,” he said.
Mr Gada further said that the state government had constructed an access to the construction site in Gada Local Government.
“The contractor had since fully mobilised to the site and site clearance has since begun to give way for the actual building of the houses,” he said.
According to him, preparations for the construction of the houses in Silame Local Government Area was in top gear.
“The state government had done a lot to alleviate the sufferings of the flood victims and we will never falter in this direction,” he said.
Mr Gada said that the state government has commenced the installation of solar-powered street lights in Sokoto metropolis worth about N345 million.
He disclosed that the first phase of the project, which has since been completed, gulped N236 million, while the second phase, which is still ongoing, will cost N109 million.
“The project is aimed at further beautifying the city, as well as enhancing the security of lives and property,” Mr Gada said.
