Armed group attack security patrol van in Bauchi

Unknown gunmen at the weekend ambushed a joint security patrol vehicle, between Dutsen Tanshi and Anguwar Kur along Railway area of the Bauchi metropolis, injuring a policeman and a civilian.
Police spokesperson, Mohammed Barau confirmed the incidence to journalists.

“The incident occurred last Saturday at about 10: 30pm, when unknown gunmen ambushed and attacked a combined team of soldiers and policemen on routine patrol in a densely populated civilian area. They shot one of our policemen on the leg and a civilian was injured in the process of the exchange of fire. They ran away because they were not able to overpower our men,” he said.
Mr Barau said the injured policeman and the civilian were immediately rushed to the hospital and were responding to treatment.

The police spokesman noted that “the casualties would have been more, because the place is a densely civilian populated area,” but for the restraint of the security officers.

He said although no arrest was made, the police are working hard towards the arrest of the criminals. Mr Barau, while appealing to the general public to help security agencies with useful information that will lead to the arrest of criminals in the state, called on people to go about their normal businesses.
“Security personnel are up to the task of protecting the lives and properties of the citizenry,” he said.

Improve security
Some of the residents of Anguwan Kur, Aminu Sani and Salisu Mohammed who narrated their experiences, said, “we were about going back home after closing our shops at the railway market when we heard several gunshots.

“These sporadic gunshots, which confused us and other people around, forced us to run helter-skelter for our dear lives.

“In fact, some of the traders left their shops open while others lay on the ground until midnight when the area became calm.” They appealed to the state government to take positive steps in addressing the high rate of insecurity in the state.
