South Western Universities: Stop posting our graduates to the North!

Authorities of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State on Thursday asked the management of the National Youths Service Corps to stop posting its graduates to the northern part of the country.

A graduate of the university, Kehinde Adeniji, was killed alongside some of his colleagues while serving in Bauchi State during the April 16 Presidential election crisis that erupted in some states in the North.

Adeniji was buried in Gbongan, Osun State, on May 3.

A statement by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Information, Protocol and Public Relations of the institution, Mr. Sola Imoru, said the university community was still traumatised by the death of Adeniji.

Imoru said the varsity had been receiving with dismay, notices from its alumni association that some of its graduates were still posted to the violence-prone states, including Bauchi, where Adeniji was killed.

He said such action, without sufficient guarantee of their safety by the NYSC, smacked of outright insensitivity and total disregard for the sensibility of the AAUA community and stakeholders.

The statement reads in part, “Adekunle Ajasin University has received various calls from the parents and guardians of these graduating students, and some of them too, about their apprehension being posted to these states.

“Consequently, the University is requesting that its graduates should not be posted to the afore-mentioned in order to guarantee their safety and assuage the anxiety of these students and their parents and guardians.

“While the Univeristy believes in the principles underlying the establishment of the NYSC, it is of the opinion that, at least, in the interim, graduating students should serve in their geo-political zones.

“This should continue until the NYSC is in a position to guarantee their safety and the Federal Government is able to effectively address the huge security challenges presently being faced by the country.”

The statement noted that the AAU authorities decided to cry out in view of the fact that there had been sporadic cases of bombing, killing and other forms of violence in Bauchi, Borno, Plateau, Niger, Yobe, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna states.
