MINISTERIAL SCREENING: Duke, Pepple make fresh list

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, weekend, sent another list of six prospective ministers to the Directorate of State Security, SSS, for security screening.

The names which were sent immediately after swearing in 12 new ministers, Saturday has the name of a prominent technocrat from Cross River State, Chief Edem Duke, as one of the nominees.

Chief Duke is credited with the TINAPA vision even before the Donald Duke government in Cross River State carried out the project construction.

Duke who is said to own Mirage Hotel in Calabar and was the former Chairman, Cross River State Chambers of Commerce and Industry was also a former spokesman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

The other nominee, also from the South South geo-political zone – and possibly to take the slot of the zone, is Ms Amal Pepple from Rivers State. Pepple was the former Head of Service of the Federation, HOS.

Her nomination may have signaled the dumping of a favourite godson of a very prominent South South leader – the godson was a late entrant to the last Executive Council of the Federation, EXCOF.

From Jigawa State came another nominee, Alhaji Nurudeen Yusuf.
The Senate is expected to continue with the confirmation session for the remaining 20 ministerial nominees. It had screened and cleared all the 14 nominees that appeared before it last week Wednesday and Thursday.
Security clearance

It will be recalled that President Jonathan had been sending the names of nominees for security clearance in batches. The order of presentation of names for security clearance by President Jonathan had been in the following sequence of 11, 19 and four – before Saturday’s six.

The six nominees would be invited for security screening today by 10am.
Vanguard was also made to understand that the reason the nominees are invited for security clearance is “because of the avalanche of petitions that trail such nominations. They are invited so that they can respond to some of the issues that some people would have raised about them.”

Vanguard gathered that in the event that the screening is completed tomorrow, they would be sent back to the President for onward transmission to the Senate for confirmation hearings.
