IBADAN – ACADEMIC and commercial activities came to halt at the University of Ibadan yesterday as thousands of students protested against continued power failure on the campus. The protest prevented staff of the institution and visitors alike from gaining access the campus.
Also, the two gates leading to the school were locked to prevent the students from taking the protest out of the campus.
According to the Publicity Secretary of the Students Union Government, Mr. Frank Nnakwe, the students had been enduring the harsh situation for more than two weeks making it difficult for them to study.
He lamented that the school was only supplied light three hours per day and issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and other authorities concerned to supply the institution power for at least, 12 hours per day.
According to Nnakwe, “we shall resist all forms of oppression. Our rights must be protected. For the past two weeks, there is no light; we can’t eat because we cannot afford to buy kerosene.”
Corroborating Mr. Nnakwe, President of the Academic Staff Union, ASUU, Dr. Ademola Aremu said the students were not alone and that the protest was on behalf of all Nigerians.
