Oyo picks female speaker

The inauguration of the Oyo State House of Assembly was held Friday with the election of Monsurat Jumoke Sumonu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) from Oyo-East/Oyo West state constituency as the first female Speaker in the 35-year-old state.

An indigene of Oyo town who worked as an immigration officer in London before the election, Sumonu would lead the seventh Assembly with Olaniyi David Babatunde of the Accord Party (AP) representing Ibadan North 1 as her deputy.
The 32-member Oyo Assembly is composed of 13 members from ACN, 12 from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and seven from AP.

ACN leader and former Governor of the state, Lamidi Adesina, on Friday said the composition of the Assembly will not affect the smooth running of the incumbent Abiola Ajimobi administration in the state.

Adesina, who was absent at the inauguration stated this while speaking with
Saturday Independent at his Felele, Ibadan residence.
He maintained that the fact that ACN has only 13 members would not constitute any problem to the party.

Friday’s inauguration was a reflection of an unwritten pact between the ruling ACN and AP as the nomination for the speakership position was made by a member of AP, Ibrahim Bolomope, representing Egbeda constituency, with Ganiyu Adekunle Wasiu of the ACN from Atiba in Oyo town seconding the motion which was unanimously accepted.

In like manner, an ACN member, Abiodun Adigun Ahmed, representing Akinyele II, made the nomination for the position of deputy speaker. Another AP member, Olagunju Kolade, from Akinyele 1 seconded it.  Bolomope, in making the nomination of Sumonu, said that in line with Section 92 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sumonu was qualified for the post, vouching that as a woman, she would not shirk in her responsibility to steer the ship of the legislative House to a successful destination.

Ajimobi, his deputy, Moses Alake Adeyemo; Secretary to the State Government, Waheed Akin Olajide; Head of Service, Tajudeen Aremu; Chief of Staff, Adeolu Akande; Oyo ACN Chairman, Akin Oke and other party loyalists witnessed the inauguration.

In her acceptance speech, Sumonu expressed gladness for being part of the success story of the state and declared that she would not disappoint her colleagues, the people of the state and herself.

‘’I shall not shirk in discharging all necessary duties; we shall be proactive in promoting the course of this administration and improving the living standard of the people of the state.

“We shall ensure the best for our society and ensure we bring the dividends of democracy to them. We shall welcome the inputs of the public and I promise that all our campaign promises will be implemented,” she said.

A motion to adjourn the maiden sitting till Tuesday was moved by Adigun Ahmed, while Femi Adelakun representing Afijio constituency, seconded it.

Former Governor Adesina on his part promised that ACN members in the Assembly would work smoothly with their colleagues from the PDP and AP in the support of Ajimobi’s administration.

Adesina added that since all the policies of the ACN administration will be in line with the interest of the general public, members of the opposition parties in the Assembly do not have any other choice than to align with the ruling party.
