The Nigerian National Petroleum Company on Thursday blamed the current scarcity of kerosene on inefficient distribution of the product.
The NNPC, however, promised that in line with the Federal Government’s assurance of addressing the scarcity within the next 10 days, a vessel carrying over 11,000 metric tons of the product berthed at the Apapa jetty in Lagos on Thursday.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Austen Oniwon, said this in Warri, Delta State, during a visit to the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company.
He noted that, contrary to reports that the reserves had been exhausted, the NNPC had kerosene in stock that could last over 40 days.
He said, “The challenge that we have relates to distribution, that is inefficiency in distribution and that was why I brought in the marketers, who were helping us to distribute, to hold a meeting with them in Abuja.
“And we all resolved and promised the nation that kerosene will get to the retailers outlets where it will be available to the consumers.”
He explained that the NNPC would keep its promise to flood the market with the product in 10 days, adding that the resolve had already started generating results.
He said, “As we speak, the first vessel that is going to drop kerosene at Apapa Jetty is just waiting for the afternoon time (that is 4 pm) to go in and it will drop 11,000 metric tons into Apapa for the major marketers and from there they will start loading. That is the first part of the 30, 000 metric tons we are sending to Apapa.
“The refineries are rolling and they are refining kerosene, so we are going to load massively from Warri, Kaduna and Port- Harcourt. And then the other marketers, that is, the Independent Petroleum Marketer Association will be supplied kerosene at the NIPCO stations. Once they get the product they will be able to take it to their various outlets.
“And I believe very strongly that within those 10 days you will start getting kerosene across the nation and the price will start coming down. The actual cause of scarcity is not due to unavailability of kerosene because as at today we have over 40 day’s sufficiency.”
The NNPC GMD also absolved the corporation of any blame in the diversion of petroleum products, arguing that it was not the job of the NNPC to police the borders.
