Niger governor criticises Jonathan ministerial nomination

Plans by President Goodluck Jonathan to make one of the directors of his campaign organisation, Shem Zagbayi Nuhu, a minister in his cabinet will go against the zoning formula of Niger State, governor Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu has said.

Mr Aliyu said although the president has the power to appoint his ministers, the choice of Mr Nuhu, a former deputy governor, goes against the spirit of zoning. He urged the president to respect the arrangement put in place in the state to ensure the fair distribution of political offices.

News that Mr Nuhu is the president's choice for a ministerial position has drawn the ire of the political class, especially members from zone A who believe that the post should be zoned to them.

Receiving the Lavun and Edati communities who paid him a thank you visit for making Mohammed Kuta Yahaya his chief of staff, governor Aliyu said the zoning principle in the state is entrenched to allow for the peaceful coexistence of the diverse ethnic nationalities in the state.

According to Mr Aliyu, since the governor comes from the Niger East senatorial district, the arrangement in the state was for the deputy-governor to come from Niger North and the minister from Niger South.

"The president should reconsider the list we sent to him, the choice of Mr Zagbayi will disorganise our zoning," Mr Aliyu said. He, however, added that there was nothing wrong if the president decided to give the state two ministerial slots.

Mr Aliyu told his visitors that the appointment of Yahaya Kuta as his chief of staff was not a demotion but a call to better service.
The governor said people had clamoured for the removal of Mr Yahaya, the former secretary to the Government from his administration but added that "I ignored all the call because I have confidence in him'.

"If I have my way Kuta will be a minister but I want him, no matter what people talk about him he is still a good person, no one will throw away a good thing," Mr Aliyu said.

The delegation was led by J.T. Kolo, a former ambassador and Abraham Yisa who thanked the governor for choosing Yahaya Kuta from their area. They pledged the support of the people of the area to the governor's administration.
