The Edo/Delta States zone of the National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria (NUEE) yesterday kicked against the proposed appointment of Bath Nnaji to head the power sector of the economy, warning that all its members across the nation would resist the appointment.

According to the electricity workers, the tenure of Mr Nnaji as chairman, power committee of the presidential advisory council, was the worst in the history of power generations in the country.
The zonal organising secretary 1, Edo/Delta States of NUEE, Joseph Ndem, addressed the press yesterday in Benin City.

“We don’t want to believe that President Goodluck Jonathan is packaging Professor Bath Nnaji for the power ministry. It would be recalled that we told Mr President that appointing him as chairman, power committee of the presidential advisory council was as good as sending a bad messenger to convey a good message.

“We were vindicated when it turned out that Professor Bath Nnaji’s main interest was not how to profer solutions on the power situation and ways to improving the sector. Rather, he was desperate on how to transfer ownership structure of the state-owned utilities to the private sector, ably represented by him.

“Our major concern now is that his name has appeared on the ministerial nominees. If the president makes the mistake of appointing him to run the ministry of power, that will mean appointing darkness to oversee light in the country,” Mr Ndem said.

Threatening to withdraw all support for Mr Nnaji, Mr Ndem said: “He will definitely work alone, for as much as we are ready to partner with the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that he succeeds, we shall continue to resist Professor Bath Nnaji whose appointment will spell doom for the country’s social and industrial development.”

They disclosed that as a pointer to his incompetence as chairman of the power committee of the presidential advisory council, the Geometrics Power Ltd, an Aba-based independent power owned by Mr Nnaji and licenced to generate and distribute electricity for more than five years, has not been able to generate beyond zero megawatt.

They further accused him of allegedly using the ethnic militia, ‘Bakassi Boys’ against PHCN staff in a battle of life and death to take over the distribution sector in the area, defying all entreaties made to him to exercise safety rules in the erecting of 33KV poles in Aba by his company.

  1. I pray the above information is incorrect. We expect our President to stand by his word and promise that he will never let Nigerians down. If what Mr Ndem says is correct, it will not only be a great disappointment it will be a disaster.
