For the first time, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Thursday publicly upbraided the state police command for its alleged hypocrisy in the handling of the violence being perpetrated by members of the proscribed state council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
Specifically, the governor accused officials of the command of deliberately looking the other way when those that were declared wanted in connection with the issue were walking freely even in the state capital.
Ajimobi made his feelings known while addressing members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, who stormed his office to demand the redeployment of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, among other requests.
It will be recalled that the state command had declared factional leaders of the union, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (a.k.a Tokyo), and Mr. Mukaila Lamidi (a.k.a Auxilliary), wanted in connection with the spate of violence recorded in the state capital.
They were declared wanted following their refusal to honour police invitation.
But Ajimobi said information made available to him showed that Lamidi was not in hiding as he was seen in a bank in the state capital during the week while the police claimed they were looking for him.
He said, “From our own information two days ago, the same Mukaila they (the police) said they were looking for went to a branch of a bank to cash money. They saw him there and we confirmed it. So, where are the police looking that they cannot find him? Let’s leave that. Events will take care of those things.
“For the arrest of that Mukaila, I am also using this opportunity to call on the police to please arrest that guy and whoever is involved in the mayhem.”
The governor assured the protesting students that his administration would restructure the motor parks within three months and that the outlawed union would never wield the kind of influence that made them perpetrate violence in the state.
He also promised them that pending the time the panel he set up on the fracas submits its report, the state government would send a delegation to visit the family of a 500-level medical student of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Mr. Usman Shanomo, who was killed during the violence.
