Immediate past Lagos Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Olasupo Shasore, SAN, weekend, said that the yet to be appointed Federal Attorney General and Minister of Justice, need not be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, to carry out his duties effectively.
He also warned that for the legal profession not to go into extinction, a conference on Law and Justice Sector Reform to include judges, lawyers and academia should be urgently convened.
Speaking at meeting of Egbe Amofin for Yoruba lawyers in Lagos, Shasore, listed the “disposition to the legal profession and ability to advance the traditions of the profession” as other criteria to be considered by President Goodluck Jonathan in appointing the next chief legal officer for the country.
According to him, “except we take urgent steps now to design, formulate a functional law and justice sector agenda, the legal profession will in few years time go into extinction. I, therefore, call for the conference on law and justice sector reform to discuss among others, law and justice development plan and Nigerian Law School.”
The need to adhere to the ethics of the legal profession, need for proper regulation of law reporting with the establishment of an independent Law Report Commission and the confusion over the constitutional clothing of the National Industrial Court, NIC, were some of the areas he touched in his presentation.
He called for the enforcement of the Rules of Professional Conduct, RPC, as it relates to lawyers/client relationship, professional misconduct, advertising , observance of the traditions of the bar, and the need to separate the office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice .
The meeting was hosted by the former First Vice-President, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mrs.Olufunke Adekoya chaired by Chief Bamidele Aiku and attended by two former NBA Presidents, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN and Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN and former General Secretary of NBA, Elder Dele Adesina, SAN.
