No fewer than 536 militants from Ikoro Community in Ovia North East Local Government of Edo State, on Thursday, surrendered their weapons, just as the Commander of the militants, Abiodun Peter (aka Kabiru), appealed to the federal and state governments to bring development to Ijaw communities in Edo State.
The weapons, which included dynamites, assault riffles, AK 47 riffles, grenades and machine guns were received by men of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta and officials of the State Security Services. The occasion also witnessed the burning of charms used by the militants.
Abiodun, who spoke with journalists shortly after the militants were disarmed, said they decided to go into creeks due to the neglect of the areas by both the state and federal governments. He said they decided to embrace the amnesty programme because of the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan and what he described as the good job being done by Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the state.
He said, “When the Federal Government granted freedom fighters amnesty, we did not partake in it because of some reasons. But the amnesty people have been persuading us to come out of the creeks, so months back, we decided to take the amnesty because we have seen the work of Oshiomhole and with the emergence of Jonathan our brother as President, we said we must work with him so that he will succeed.
“For the past years in Edo State, there has not been any meaningful development and our area here has been totally neglected. But we have started seeing improvement since Oshiomhole came in as governor.”
