WARRI – A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stalwart in Delta State, Dr John Akwara, escaped death by the whiskers, at Sapele in Delta State, when some suspected assassins, wearing camouflage army, stormed his hospital at Macpherson Road at about 8.00 p.m to kill him.
The suspected assassins, numbering five, besieged the hospital shortly after Dr. Akwara left the premises. It will be recalled that he sought nomination for the Ethiope Federal Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in March.
A source at the hospital, said the gunmen came in a tinted Jetta vehicle, wearing army uniforms.
They were unlucky, however, as men of the Joint Task Force on the Niger Delta and the police in Sapele were contacted, and they swung into action immediately, forcing the assassins to escape
Dr. Akwara told newsmen that he was surprised that hired killers were sent to kill him, saying that he did not quarrel with anybody to warrant his assassination.
He added that himself and other aspirants, who contested for the Ethiope Federal House of Representatives seat dragged the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the candidate, who was declared winner to the court over the inconclusive primaries of the party.
