Barely 48 hours to the Presidential election across the country, the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Abubakar Ringim, has said that the restriction of movement for Saturday, April 16, Presidential election will commence from today 10pm to 6am.
The restriction, according to the police, will resume from 8am to 6pm on Saturday, April 16 within voting areas and centres.
“The restriction order is to enable law enforcement agents monitor the activities of miscreants, thugs and other criminal elements who may intend to use the cover of darkness to interrupt the smooth conduct of the elections.
“Persons on essential duties and INEC officials are exempted from this restriction order as they will be properly identified with their identity card.
“The Police will not condone any act or conduct that is detrimental to the smooth conduct of the election as any trouble maker will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.
“The Nigeria Police is using this medium to assure all Nigerians that all law enforcement agents are working in collaboration to ensure violence-free and fair elections,” the police said.
Meanwhile, the Police have reminded the public, especially politicians and the electorate, that the order proscribing the existence and operation of the Peace Corps of Nigeria was still in force in the country.
Consequently, the IGP has warned that any person or group of persons found parading, operating or conducting themselves under the name of Peace Corps of Nigeria or any other name as election monitor or disguising as an NGO covering election or seen controlling crowd and traffic during or after elections, would be arrested and prosecuted.
Towards this end, the IG yesterday directed all Assistant Inspectors General of Police in charge of zones, Commissioners of Police and all other security agencies involved in the election to arrest any member of the proscribed Peace Corps if sighted in uniform during and after the election period.
A statement signed by the Force Public Relations officer, DCP Olusola Amore, noted: “This proscription order has consequently banned Peace Corps of Nigeria from participating in the conduct of any election or public function anywhere in the country.
“They are also banned from parading themselves in uniform of any kind or involving themselves in traffic or crowd control at any public place across the country.”
“The Police will not condone any act or conduct that is detrimental to the smooth conduct of the election as any trouble makers will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.
“The Nigeria Police is using this medium to assure all Nigerians that all law enforcement agents are working in collaboration to ensure violence free and fair elections,” the police said.
