TO improve rail transport services for commuters in the Maiduguri metropolis of Borno State, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) at the weekend, launched its mass transit train services covering a minimum of 23 kilometres.
Transport Minister, Yusuf Suleiman, who launched the Maiduguri-Duwari Mass Transit Train Service (MTTs), said the rail service, which had already commenced in Lagos, Kaduna, Jos and Kano, was in fulfillment of the promises of the Federal Government to revamp the country’s rail transport industry and deliver effective and efficient rail services to the people.
He said: “Few months ago, the administration commenced an aggressive rehabilitation of the entire railway facilities in the country which, so far, brought about the rehabilitation of about 1,315 kilometres of the entire railway system from Lagos to Kano.”
The minister said the motive power base of the Nigerian Railway, which was at zero level in the past, had been fortified with 25 brand new locomotive engines ordered from the General Electric South America in Brazil.
He added that the engine was specifically built to conform to the nation’s tropical environment. He explained that some of these newly acquired locomotive engines had been deployed in various locations to commence the mass transit scheme of the NRC.
He said no fewer than 500 coaches and wagons were refurbished and put to use for the Nigerian rail transport system, stressing that the mechanical workshops of NRC all over the country were re-equipped and “practically repositioned to handle periodic and major maintenance works on the rolling stock and the engines of the corporation.”
The minister disclosed that the Enugu-Port Harcourt mass transit rail services would commence as soon as the on-going road construction by the state governments in the area was completed.
Managing Director of the NRC, Adeseyi Sijuwade, in his welcome address said the 23 kilometres Maiduguri-Duwari Mass Transit Train service was one of the major milestones recorded by the corporation, noting that the introduction of the MTTs truly exemplified the strength and readiness of the corporation to perform its statutory duty of moving commuters in the country from one end to another.
