Navy deploys 15 gun boats, helicopter in Delta

The Nigerian Navy is to deploy no fewer than 15 gunboats as well as helicopters to safeguard electoral materials and voters in today’s general election in the waterways of Delta State.

Specifically, our source learnt that the gunboat, Papa 219, would be in action today as well as other days of the election. The purpose of the deployment, it was learnt, is to safeguard sensitive materials and to maintain the restriction of movement and closure of the nation’s sea borders.

The NNS Delta, Warri Naval Base is also providing two platoons of armed personnel to join the 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army to provide security on land during the elections.

The Commanding Officer of the NNS Delta, Commodore Henry Babalola, who made the revelation in an interview with newsmen in Warri, also disclosed that the boats, including the fastest on the NN Fleet, Master-class Boat, would check influx of people in the area.

He warned that the command was determined to ensure the strictest application of the curfew and restriction of movement during today’s exercise and warned that only persons with legitimate business in the area should be seen during the hours.

Babalola revealed that the command had learnt some lessons from its role in the conduct of the January 6, 2011 re-run election in the state, although he denied allegations that some men of the force assisted a political party against the other.
